25 August 2021

Janet May, Director of Human Resources at Houston Community College, has been shortlisted to receive the 2021 Distinguished Service Award from the Professional Association of Colleges and Universities for Human Resources (CUPA-HR).

This national award honors HR transformation work in higher education, recognizing teams or individuals who have provided HR leadership resulting in significant and continuous organizational change within their institutions. CUPA-HR is pleased to make a contribution of $ 3,000 to the Houston Community College STEAM Summer Camp for local high school students.

May first held a leadership role in CUPA-RH when she joined the Western Region Board of Directors in 2010. She served on the Board for 10 years, in the roles of Secretary, President-elect, President, Past President and – for three years – as the representative of the Western Region on the National Board of Directors. Other highlights of May’s national CUPA-RH service include serving on the Membership Committee, Emerging Issues Committee, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, and participating in the creation of inclusive communities of CUPA-RH.

“Janet is the epitome of CUPA-HR and its values,” said David Blake, vice president and chief operating officer of the California Western School of Law and former chairman of the board of CUPA-HR. “On her campus, a predominantly Hispanic institution, she is a strong and visible advocate for advancing the diversity and inclusion efforts of students, staff and faculty. Through her service over the years, she has demonstrated her leadership and commitment to our profession and our association.
