Barcelona are said to be in pole position to sign 26-year-old Italy international Alessio Romagnoli, either in January or next summer.

According to a report by Catalan media El Nacional, Barcelona are the first to secure the services of Alessio Romagnoli. The 26-year-old AC Milan defender is also being courted by ex-club AS Roma and could switch to a discounted transfer in the January transfer window.

Alessio Romagnoli joined AC Milan from AS Roma in August 2015 and has since become one of Serie A’s top defenders. the Rossoneri Club captain Romagnoli has played a key role in the Italian giants’ recent resurgence as they appear to have established themselves as Champions League regulars.

To date, Romagnoli has played 232 times for Milan, scoring nine goals and two assists. However, the 26-year-old has question marks over his future at San Siro, having lost his regular spot following the arrival of Fikayo Tomori. In addition, with the end of his contract, he could become a free agent next summer. Such a situation alerted Barcelona.

The interest of Barcelona is hardly surprising despite the arrival of Eric Garcia in the summer transfer window. Indeed, Samuel Umtiti is at the lowest of his time with the Catalan giants, who deemed him surplus to needs. Recent reports have suggested that Umtiti is a January target for Benfica.

In addition to Umtiti, Clément Lenglet has suffered a dizzying drop in fortune over the past year, while Gerard Pique is in the twilight of his career. This leaves Garcia, Ronald Araujo and Oscar Mingueza as the only recognized center-backs available to Xavi, which is why Barcelona’s desire to strengthen the core of their defense makes sense.

To that end, Romagnoli has become one of the options on Barcelona’s radar, with the Italy international also being an option for AS Roma. However, Barcelona’s interest has turned the 26-year-old’s head, and he could choose to move on to Camp Nou.

However, it remains unclear whether Barcelona will launch the offensive for Romagnoli in January or wait until next summer to sign him on a transfer from Bosman. It remains to be seen when the Catalan giants will decide to recruit the player from San Siro, after taking the lead in the race to secure his services.
