SYDNEY: With two top 10 players in their ranks, Italy are an even stronger team than the one that reached this year’s ATP Cup final and they are confident they can go further by winning the next one. edition next month, said Matteo Berrettini.

Italy lost to Russia in the league game at this year’s event, which is played in a format similar to that of the Davis Cup. For the 2022 version, they were drawn into Group B with champion Russia, host Australia and late France.

The top team from each of the four groups advance to the semi-finals of the US $ 10 million tournament.

“I think if it’s possible the team is even stronger this year so our goal is to get the title,” said world number seven Berrettini, who lost to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon this year in of his first grand finale.

“We know it will be tough work. Every game will be tough, but we believe we can do it.”

Besides Berrettini, Italy also has in its team Jannik Sinner 10th and former number nine Fabio Fognini.

World number two Daniil Medvedev will lead Russia’s title defense, but they were exhausted with Andrey Rublev, fifth in the table, and Aslan Karatsev, 18th, excluded after testing positive for COVID-19.

“Obviously their squad is different from last year for reasons related to COVID, so it will be a different game for sure,” Berrettini said.

“But obviously Russia with Daniil, which they did last year, is going to be one of the toughest games we’ve got to play.”

After winning the ATP Cup title at the start of the year, the Russian team also won the Davis Cup title and Medvedev said that a lot is still expected of them despite the weakening of the team.

“I like that kind of pressure,” said the US Open champion. “It makes you play better. I think it will give us four players the best tennis possible.”
