With fall fast approaching, get ready to “fall” in love with all that Little Italy has to offer. September is full of new and recurring events, from the inaugural casino experience in an Italian garden to the popular speech on the state of the Little Italy neighborhood by Chief Administrator Marco Li Mandri. Stick to the basics or try something new, but just know there’s endless fun in our favorite neighborhood.

Sample local produce, fresh flowers, and handmade treats from local artisans every Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the popular Little Italy Farmer’s Market Mercato. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, stop by to discover fresh local treats and other merchandise while enjoying San Diego’s beautiful weather. As they say in Little Italy, the “pastabilities” are endless.

If you’re looking for a night out where you can dress to impress, then the premier Casino di Piazza, a casino experience in an Italian garden, is the event for you! Guests will be transported to Milan’s manicured gardens with walls lined with lush greenery and classic Italian statues for a night full of entertainment in the heart of Piazza della Famiglia on Friday, September 16 from 7-11 p.m. cocktails from the Little Italy Food Hall, light appetizers and live music, plus popular casino games Blackjack, Craps and Roulette. Admission, either General Admission ($65) or VIP ($125), includes $250 in casino chips, cocktail(s) and light hors d’oeuvres. The following week, Little Italy also hosts the return of the State of the Neighborhood presentation to Piazza della Famiglia. On Thursday, September 22 from 6:30-8:30 p.m., all are invited to sit down and learn about the neighborhood’s success during the pandemic and what’s to come in Little Italy from the chief administrator of the Little Italy Association, Marco Li Mandri. Admission to the event is free, but there is a VIP ticket option for $50 which includes Little Italy Food Hall admission, a glass of wine, a pre-selected dessert, and reserved seating for the presentation. All other guests are welcome to purchase food and bites from surrounding Little Italy businesses like Civico 1845, Sorrento or Zinqué and even grab a glass of craft beer or wine at the Little Italy Food Hall to enjoy during the presentation. General public seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis, so come early to sit by the presentation!

The fun doesn’t stop there. On Friday, September 30 from 8-9 p.m., celebrate The Godfather’s 50th birthday with An Evening You Can’t Refuse with Gianni Russo at Amici Park. Learn about Gianni Russo’s iconic Italian character, Carlo Rizzi, while learning enchanting stories about the famous film as well as Russo’s take on the importance of food, faith and family. Guests have the option to choose from a variety of ticket options, including general reservation for $65 and VIP table for $175 per person, which includes a delicious Rovino dinner, two complimentary drinks and a signed framed letter by none other than Gianna Russo himself. For the biggest Russo fans, a special add-on is available that will give guests the chance to meet and talk with Russo as well as receive all manner of commemorative, signature treats of the occasion for just $75. As actor Al Pacino said in the film, “I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse.”

Be sure to dive into some of the amazing Little Italy experiences and tours available this month in the neighborhood. Located throughout San Diego, these amazing, curated experiences will have you feeling like you’ve taken a trip to Rome for the night. One of the tours is the Taste of Italy food tour, which allows you to immerse yourself in the delectable tastes and flavors of Italian cuisine with this culinary tour of Little Italy. This 3-hour food walking tour will highlight four restaurants in Little Italy, each offering dishes from a different region of Italy. Discover the story behind every recipe from first-generation Italian restaurateurs and gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of what Little Italy is all about. This gastronomic tour takes place Monday to Thursday from 4pm to 7:30pm, Friday and Saturday from 11am to 2pm and Sunday from 11am to 2pm and from 4pm to 7:30pm. buds on a culinary adventure.
