Jannik Sinner wins again in Antwerp and targets ATP finals
ANTWERP, Belgium (AP) – Jannik Sinner reached his fifth circuit final of the season and remained in contention for the ATP final by defeating Lloyd Harris 6-2, 6-2 at the Europe Saturday.
Second-seeded Argentinian Diego Schwartzman defeated US qualifier Jenson Brooksby 6-4, 6-0 in the other semi-final of the indoor tournament in Antwerp.
Sunday’s final will be Sinner and Schwartzman’s first meeting.
Favorite Sinner moved closer to his fourth title this season, sending off his South African opponent in less than 90 minutes.
“I love playing here,” said the 20-year-old Italian, noting that he reached his first ATP semi-finals two years ago in Antwerp. “I like the interior. I hope I can play, tomorrow, also a great game.
Sinner, who has yet to lose a set in the tournament, is chasing Hubert Hurkacz for eighth and final place in the ATP Finals. He also follows Cameron Norrie.
“It’s a long way,” Sinner said of trying to qualify for the end-of-season competition in Turin which begins on November 14. “There is still this tournament and hopefully three to play. There are other players, amazing players, everyone is trying to do that. Obviously it’s on my mind and I hope this If not, I can be happy with my season (that) I played.
Brooksby, who did not play in 2020 due to a toe injury, was aiming for his second final of the year after Newport.
Schwartzman is 5-1 against the Americans this season.
