Man Utd transfer news LIVE: Ronaldo’s ‘SIX FIGURE’ bonus, Strakosha deal imminent, Frenkie de Jong update
Jones backed to get good at United
Phil Jones is backed to finally have the final say on the mocking executives who have mocked him for years.
No player has been as wild as the Manchester United centre-back, who spent much of his career at Old Trafford battling injuries.
The 30-year-old is doing it again now, taking time off from the pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia to ensure he’s fit for next month’s big kick-off.
Jones refused to throw in the towel and pushed back on loan moves in his determination to prove he can still become a United regular.
And with the arrival of Erik ten Hag meaning a level playing field for everyone, there is finally a ray of light for a man Sir Alex Ferguson once said could be United’s best player. .
Now, former teammate David Dunn has backed him to succeed this campaign.
“Jonesy was always a special player – he could cover ground quickly, he was athletic, very determined and so resilient, which he had to be,” Dunn told SunSport.
“He was so tough too. And I’m not just talking physically but mentally, which has always been the case at Blackburn. So I know Jonesy will have no problem bouncing back.
“I think he had a rough deal, but he’s just so versatile.
“He can play right-back, centre-back, central midfielder, all over the pitch.
“I see it as a gift but it probably had a bad effect on him at times.
“I know he’s had injuries, but despite all the problems he’s only 30 and don’t forget, that means he doesn’t have the miles on his legs.”
