Puppies allowed on public transport in Italy this summer
Trenitalia, Italy’s main rail transport company, is offering free dog transport this summer. Small pets such as cats are also included in the offer during the summer months.
Like luggage, if pets fit in a basket with a maximum size of 70 x 30 x 50 cm, they are entitled to a free train journey. During the entire trip, pets must remain in their transport cage and animals are limited to a maximum of 1 per person.
This offer extends to long-distance intercity trains and in Rome, travelers can take their pets on the metro, buses and trams if they are wearing a leash, according to voyage.nuity.com
Travelers wishing to take larger dogs with them can do so on Trenitalia trains but must pay the value of a pet ticket which corresponds to the price of the passenger ticket. They must also wear a leash and a muzzle. Pet owners should also bring their dog’s canine registry certificate and health book if they are traveling with their pet.
These tickets are available via the “travel with your dog” option on the Trenitalia website.
The offer is extended to first and second class tickets, as well as Executive, Business, Premium and Standard tickets and is valid for travel on Trenitalia Freccia and intercity trains. Free Furry Friends Trip is available until 15De September 2022.
Italian railway company Italo is imposing weight restrictions on the offer, allowing dogs weighing up to 5 kilograms to travel for free as long as they remain in their crate. That’s about the same weight as an air fryer or a bedside table for reference.
